With all due respect Jeff (and I know you have offered me good advice in the past), I don't feel I am "experimenting" as this is a treatment recommended by a holistic vet that has treated ferrets as well as something that has been tried by a ferret shelter with excellent results. Even if I WAS "experimenting", he is very, very ill, and frankly my ferret vet has hinted towards euthanasia as an option to me at any time, so I am helping him, not hurting him. I sense this group is fairly pro-allopathic, whereas I personally am open to "alternative" therapies other than pharmaceuticals, especially when all else fails.
I am telling you that even WITH food and carafate, the pred made him sicker and not wanting to eat, not to mention he fought me tooth and nail everytime I had to give it to him, causing himself (and me!) extreme stress, gagging, and that, I feel contributes to a poor quality of life.
My memory doesn't serve me well, but I think I chose not to go the route of diazoxide due to cost, side effects, or both.
Just after I made my first post, I went to the mailbox and my order was there, so I've given him the first dose. The powder has no taste (yay!).
I will report back with any observations.
