I want to point out that Sukie and I, as well as the other moderators make a point to be as accurate and current as possible with the information that we present on the FHL.
There are certain things that are known to be toxic to ferrets without a doubt, such as onions! I consider the SPCA Poison Control Centre as the medical authority on toxins. It was their head toxicologist who answered my question about raisins.
Raisins are known to be toxic to dogs, loads of evidence there. Therefore, it is a natural assumption that they might be toxic in ferrets. It wasn't until I was asked to find corroborating evidence that I realized there wasn't any available.
Having said that, I would expect people to use common sense. Giving a ferret 10+ raisins per day, as the recent example claimed that caused renal failure, is not using common sense! And that was my worry when I spoke to the vet. That is, if you tell people there is no proof that raisins are toxic, people will presume its okay to feed any amount. And in reality we just don't know how many might in fact be toxic.
I always err on the side of caution and therefore, I believe it is prudent not to give any raisins.
Bottom line - please use common sense folks!
