Subject: [ferrethealth] Ferret FIP-like or could this be something else??
To: Ferret Health <ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com>

I have a 10 month old un-neutered and un-descented male from a small private breeder.  My baby boy.  About 3 weeks ago, he started sneezing, a little coughing, lethargic, and watery eyes.  Off to the vet - he had a high temp also.  He had chest xrays, nothing conclusively positive.  She put him on Amoxi and Enrofloxcin for 2 weeks.  After the 2 weeks, he still had a little sneezing but was still *very* lethargic.  She put him on Azithromycin for 10 days.

No sneezing after the 10 days, but still **very** lethargic, and now seemed painful in lower abdomen area, and he was making little grunting noises in the litterbox.  Back to vets.  She did a urinalysis - came back with a slight amount of blood in it.  Also did bloodwork:
-high white count: 14,000 (2500 -8000 normal)
-high total proteins: 8.8 (5.5 - 7.6 norm)
-high globulin: 6.8 (2.9 - 4.9 norm)
-high triglycerides: 172 (31 - 101 norm)

He also had some low values that I don't know about:
-hemocrit:  35.4 (43 - 55 norm)
-MCV:  34  (46 - 65 norm)
-MCH: 13.1  (15.5 - 19 norm)

He also had an ultrasound, which showed a mass near his kidneys, attached to his intestines.  They couldnt get an aspirate since it had a large vessel and some smaller ones running thru it.  The vet suggested possible Ferret FIP or lymphoma... but advised an exploratory, which he is scheduled for tommorrow am.

The other things about him are that he only has one testicle descended (but the vet thinks she can palpitate the other one in his inguinal area.  He used to occasionally poof, but he hasn't done so in a good month... I asked the vet about a blocked scent gland causing him pain, she doesnt think so.

She said it could be anything, but Ferret FIP or lymphoma she is guessing at now.  Could this be anything else??

Thanks for reading my long post,
Andrea
