Subject: [ferrethealth] Vanadyl Sulfate for Insulinoma AND Melatonin for Adrenal
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

I think it is very important to come to this group with an open-mind, and be able to share all ideas related to ferret health. Whenever possible to bring new ideas to the board so that there can be some "Gentle" discussion, and see how things work out in the end.

Not too long ago, I had similar off-line discussions with some very prominent, and long standing members on this board regarding Melatonin Implants and "it is only cosmetic." There were those that slammed (on and off-line) the doctor that brought these to our attention at a symposium. We all know that we've come a loooong way from these Melatonin and now Des. Implant discussions. Those same non-believers are now sharing this information to newbie ferret board members.

We all know that ferrets have similar illnesses, and yet each is so totally different. Easy example- Amoxi. Some ferrets love the taste and will fight to get it. Other ferrets will fear poop & pee, and fight you to NOT take it, leaving you wearing pink polka-dots to work.

I've learned so much for this board, that I hope we all continue to feel comfortable coming here, sharing and asking questions. If you notice, my name isn't here often ... my ferrets have thicker skin than I do, but I will do what I can if it is for my furkids.

I spent Saturday trying to help a young lady, save her ferret (with Insulinoma) that wasn't getting enough nutrition. The "Typical" meds weren't working, and he was failing to thrive. She had only one good choice to let him go. She had been doing baby food but not enough -- we got some gravy going for him, and a couple of other things. She was willing to try anything because he still had a spark to live, and even my jaded eyes could see the spark.

As time goes by, I hope to hear more of how this product (and other products) worked for her, and if the blood glucose levels have changed. We all need another product in our arsenal to save these precious beings we call family.

P.S.
on WebMD (which anyone can check out to verify) this is what is says regarding use for Diabetes:

Diabetes. There is some evidence that high doses of vanadyl sulfate (100 mg daily, providing 31 mg elemental vanadium) might improve the way people with type 2 diabetes use insulin, the hormone that processes sugar. The study suggested that high-dose vanadium might lower blood sugar in people with type 2 diabetes. But there are two big concerns about this study. First, it only involved 40 people, so the conclusions need to be confirmed using a bigger study group. Secondly, even if high-dose vanadium works for diabetes, these high doses, used long-term, might not be safe. It's not known if lower doses work as well. For now, don't use vanadium to treat type 2 diabetes. Wait to see if additional larger studies show benefit and safety.

(personally I don't believe she was giving even close to that high amount when considering the body weight of a ferret compared to a person)
