one important thing to note about omeprazole is that you need to *taper* when discontinuing this med. Do not abruptly stop giving it. The body adjusts to getting it and if you suddenly stop it there's a rebound effect where the acid is worse than before. A human who had been on it told me she experienced this and it was extremely unpleasant.
I used it to try to prevent stress ulcers in a ferret with permanent spinal injury. Apparently it's not very stable when compounded so my vet had me use the time-release capsules (10mg). I would open the capsule and portion out a few granules to give in a bit of food, although I *think* it's best given on an empty stomach at least 20 minutes before a meal.
Its mechanism and effects have a slightly different range from Pepcid. Ranitidine and Cimetidine are also similar but slightly different. Protonix is an even newer variant but I've only seen it used IV....
