Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: Vanadyl Sulfate for Insulinoma AND Melatonin for Adrenal
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Thank you, Florence, for putting into words something I could not do without getting angry.

So many pet owners have a closed mind when it comes to alternative treatments for their pets and think that "natural" medicine does not work.

I joined this group, along with a couple others, for information and suggestions about treating my ferrets after my first dealings with insulinoma not responding to "normal" treatments.

Since joining, this and the other groups, I have seen nothing but agruments about new ideas for treating different things. I have been the receipient of some of the "bashing," myself.
Just as in humans, animals respond differently to different treatments.

As for vandadyl sulfate, I do know that the website does state that it is used in diabetes, but that they have found it works for insulinoma. I researched this last fall because I don't like pred and what it does to the body, but I know that in some cases, it is needed.

I started giving my Greta 3 mL of aloe vera juice twice a day to try to keep the ascites from her liver issues down. She had adrenal disease, lymphoma and insulinoma and some kind of liver problem. I feel that if I had not started her on milk thistle, dandelion, aloe juice, Ester-C, along with her pred and diazoxide, she would have been dead 2 years ago. Instead, I had to put her to sleep February 1st. She had a good quality of life up until that day and I believe it was because of the additional natural supplements I gave her that I had her with me for so long. Literally, in 6 hours time, her health declined.

Yeah, I know aloe is toxic to dogs and cats, but you can't tell me it is toxic to ferrets....not after what I have experienced with my Greta. She had no GI problems, no bloody poops, no runny poops for 2 years. Would I use it again if I felt it necessary? DEFINITELY!! Do I expect it to always work? DEFINITELY NOT!! but I keep my mind open.

Louise

[The ideal is complementary medicine, that is, a combination of alternative and conventional.... and a healthy dose of common sense while retaining an open mind. All points of view need to be considered, as well as all the pros and cons aired and weighed. This should not be thought of as bickering as much as presenting the facts from each perspective. In the end it makes us a better informed caregiver to our fuzzkids. - Moderator (TD)].
