Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: Vanadyl Sulfate for Insulinoma
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

KaRayZee, I will put you on my list of people that want updates on Coco. So far in the past few days, he's had 3 good days, 1 bad day, and 2 so-so. Very hard to say what's going on - however, he's not had any "good" days prior to this, so that is promising.

[If the Vanadyl was working he would not have 1 bad day and 2 so-so. - Moderator (TD)].

Just wanted to clarify, I have not consulted with the vet who has used this as a treatment. I simply went by the information provided on his website and by the ferret rescue who is studying this treatment. I have not discussed this with my personal vet because there is no point...she probably doesn't know anything about it and she will probably say if I want to try it to try it because he's so sick anyways it won't hurt.

[This is VERY alarming! Even an alternative vet would not recommend treating a ferret with an illness as serious as insulinoma on your own - without veterinary guidance or input. He is so sick because he is not receiving proper monitoring or treatment. He will die and you will only have yourself to blame. - Moderator (TD)].

Regarding testing Coco's blood glucose - here is the problem...it is not going to be cost effective to have my vet check it for me regularly and I personally am needle-phobic and HATE inflicting discomfort on my pets - I even get upset when they gag/cough from medicine. So I can't do the testing myself.

[It is not a matter of being cost-effective. The only way to know for certain whether this treatment is working is to have his BG checked. You don't have to do it yourself if you are uncomfortable, but he does need to be monitored regularly with an experimental treatment of any kind. Even the shelter will tell you that.- Moderator (TD)].

I am just monitoring how he is acting. I know that's not scientific, nor what most here would do, but I have to work within my own limitations and not cause myself more stress and anxiety. Plus I also don't want to be pricking him and upsetting him and what quality of life he has left.

[What is more important to you, your comfort level - or Coco's life? Moderator (TD)].

I did email the rescue again [the quote from the shelter was removed because we did not receive permission from the shelter to use their quote and this would violate FHL rules and legal copyright. We will be happy to approve another post if permission from the shelter is received. - Moderator (TD)].

[Open discussions on the FHL are encouraged. Alternative treatments can be effective if used in combination with conventional medicine. However, in all circumstances a veterinarian should be monitoring treatments. In this case that is not happening. A ferret's life is seriously in danger without it. - Moderator (TD)].
