So black tarry poop means gastric ulcers. Frank red blood in the poop can mean lower GI ulcers or a parasite, coccidia. You can treat both, although you will not always win the fight.

We use flagyl, amoxi and carafate for ulcers. If there's red poop I assume critter might have coccidia (we had a deadly outbreak here in '06, a new strain at the time), so I add albon just to be safe. Critters can have both coccidia and giardia on board for their entire life and only have an outbreak when the body is busy fighting something else, say the emergence of an illness.

Even though you see your ferret eating kibble he's not telling you his daily food intake schedule, so try offering kibbles at unusual times...put some in his hammie, offer in your hand whilst playing soft music with the candles lit and so forth hahaha...kidding, but you know..make it a treat. Chicken baby food is great and if he likes it, offer it every couple of hours when he's not thinking about kibble so you know something is going in frequently.

Frequent meals are the best defense against blood sugar fluctuations and ulcers of any type. Their little digestive tracts are so fast at only 4 hours. Ideally you'd have something on the tum all the time, but I mean honestly...a digestive tract that's only 4 hours long? Sheesh!
