Nanci,

Just replying to answer your question.

He was on pred (1mg/2xday) from April 2011 when he was diagnosed(age 4 1/2), to December last year...then he took a major turn for the worse, stopped eating/drinking, barely moving, always gagging, and trace blood around his bum with black tarry diarrhea and I rushed him to the vet. She told me to completely STOP the pred due to a possible ulcer, put him on carafate for a while (which I did) and see what happened. He recovered from that episode, but I was giving him constant care, syringe feeding him A/D food, etc. After he was eating regularly on his own again, IMO he seemed the same OFF the pred insofar as low blood sugar episodes and energy level as he was ON the pred. In addition, every time I had to give him the pred, he would get really upset and gag/cough/drool for minutes afterwards and go hide. I felt it was not right to do that to him again twice/day every day for the rest of his life, when in my observation the pred was potentially causing GI problems. Yes, I did always try to ensure he had something in his tummy before I gave it to him. So ultimately, it was my decision (with the support of my vet) to stop the pred based on the course of events. I should also quickly state he eats a combo of Evo, Zupreem, and Kaytee. As of now, he's eating multiple times/day on his own - if I had to guess probably 6.

And yes, Tressie he does have lymphoma. My vet really gave me no treatment options regarding it.

Holly
