Subject: [ferrethealth] Dexamethasone and Prednisilone
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

I use both depending on what is best for the ferret.

When giving prednisilone I pull the dosage up into the syringe and then pull up recipe to fill the rest of the syringe, mix it up and dose it that way. I've also used heavy whipping cream pulled up with the pred and my ferrets take it easily - no sputtering or fussing, in fact healthy ferrets try to lick the syringe too. Recipe is served immediately following the dosing. Ferrets that have been dosed with plain pred through a syringe may fight initially because the syringe itself represents nastiness. I give them straight recipe or heavy whipping cream in the syringe several times throughout the day to get them use to the syringe representing goodness.

I make sure the oral pred is alcohol free prednisilone as some vets/pharmacies may substitute liquid prednisone instead. Prednisone is converted to prednisilone by the liver which makes the body work harder.

Dexamethasone is injectable and I give it to ferrets that have tummy problems with prednisilone. Both drugs change the pH of the stomach and can cause tummy issues, but in my experience, ferrets that can't tolerate oral pred have done well with injectable Dexamethasone given once daily.

Mazy had severe insulinoma and after discussing treatment with our vet, she was on both - oral pred twice daily and dexamethasone injection once daily. Mazy comfortably gained 3 months on this treatment.

Treatment should be individualized for that particular ferret.
