Subject: [ferrethealth] Healing Ulcers
To: <ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com>

Regarding ulcers, and in response to Nanci’s post, I wanted to say that flagyl is not always a ‘necessary’ part of ulcer treatment. The four times that I’ve had to fight ulcers in ferrrets, ranging from early stage to near-fatal stage, I’ve used amoxicillin, carafate, and pepcid. I’ve also fed them a mostly soup diet, to try to prevent any further irritation to the ulcers that might result from kibble. And every time the ulcers have healed 100%. It just takes time and perseverance to give these three meds on a regular and timely basis every day for 4-6 weeks (the amoxi was only 4 weeks, but I continued with carafate longer).

As Nanci said, and as most of us know, flagyl is fought against violently by most ferrets, causing further stress, the thing that caused the ulcers in the first place. And its taste is just too strong to hide it in soup. So, I’ve chosen to avoid it whenever possible, and have had good success every time when trying to heal ulcers. That’s just MY experience, but I did want to relate it to the list.

>Now the regimen we use, flagyl + amoxi + carafate includes a med (flagyl) that tastes HORRIBLE, but I've seen it quite literally save lives.
> Carafate is a good idea, but I certainly don't think it's enough when ulcers are afoot.
