Subject: [ferrethealth] ferrets and parakeets?
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Do parakeets carry any diseases that ferrets could catch? Our adoptive family will be housing them in the same room and I had some concern for our ferrets...?

{Yes, there are a number of zoonotic viruses that can be transmitted between these 2 species and humans. H1N1 is one example. The other issue to consider is that ferrets predate birds and will cause high levels of stress in the birds, which will affect their overall health. Ferrets are very clever at hunting birds and the birds really are at risk if not kept in a separate safe area of the home. I had a ferret surrendered because he had managed to kill 3 parakeets, 1 cockatiel and a love bird (whose mate subsequently died of gried) in a household over a couple of weeks. - Moderator (TD)].
