The food that George and all our ferrets have readily available (at all times) is a 50/50 mix of Zupreem and Shepherd  & Green Ferret food.  We found that these food had the highest Fat and Protein content, and did have wheat or corn listed as one of the first 4 ingredients.

Also the food we give our ferrets right before they get their prednisolone is 15 mls of purred chicken with water.  They seem to love it as they are trying to swim to the counter (the stand on a towel while eating).

We do have Ferret Nation cages but all levels have a fleece floor as well as numerous hammocks and sleep sacks, which are rutinely washed and cleaned.

Our ferrets get play time everyday and their play area is their room (once a bedroom) the hall and half another bedroom.  This play area has several ferret furniture items, tunnels, and other play items.  The floor in both rooms and hall is carpet.  The only time they have to stand or walk on a hard slippery surface is when they crawl under the flooring in their cages.

I notice George seems to have curled toes is when he has some ataxia or showing hind end weakness.  They are not always curled.

Oh and by the way Ferrets did not evolve anything they are today the same way they were when they were created.

Thank you for your information.  Its always helpful to get ideas and suggestions as we're always learning and sometimes we get use to one way of thinking and forget that we may be looking at something we didn't think of or see.

I feel the food we are giving is among the best out there (if not the best available).  They do not get a lot of treats but the treats we use are 8 in 1 ferret diet (a food but we give it like a treat), some bandits, and for Simba who is very fussy on his treats some (one at a time) Totally Ferret Treats (on our last bag and they are not making it any more)

Again Thank You for your information.

Mike
