Subject: [ferrethealth] getting a glucose reading from a ferret with quickly clotting blood
To: "ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com" <ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com>

i know sukie has written on this before but i just wanted some options and/or actual protocol type steps to use. i tried searching the archives (though i probably did it wrong) and couldn't find any info on how best to get blood from him to test.

firstly let me state the problematic boy is NOT believed to be insulinomic as he was tested on a 3.5 hour fast at the vets about 2 months ago and his reading was 83. i haven't seen any signs of insulinoma since then either. i want to test him as a precaution though due to his age (roughly 4-5 y/o).

i have an alphatrak and know how to use it. i test my other boy (who was found to be insulinomic in december) easily and keep his records. but when i try to test this one, his paw pad stops bleeding almost instantaneously and i can not seem to get enough blood to test. i kept feeling like i was doing something wrong until i read the insulinoma conversations lately and saw that this is a known problem with some ferrets.

i'm still relatively new to ferret ownership and so would greatly appreciate any info on the best ways to test him. like alternate sites/methods.

thank you
amanda
