Subject: [ferrethealth] Dexamethasone (was: Insulinoma Question)
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Hi, Drew, and everyone else,

Dexamethasone can be given orally as well. We had a ferret named
Pertwee who was completely non-responsive to pediapred (prednisolone)
so we had to use dexamethasone instead. He had surgically induced
Addison's Disease after a second adrenalectomy so he was on oral
dexamethasone for four years. This was quite some time ago but I
don't remember it being an expensive medication at all.

While obviously there are different considerations when treating
insulinoma it may well be worthwhile discussing oral dexamethasone
with your ferret's vet.

The usual disclaimer applies: I am not a vet. I don't even play one
on TV. I'm just a moderately experienced ferret owner.

All the best,
Caity
with Zephyr and Chin Soon
