Subject: [ferrethealth] PLEASE READ: Recent controversies on and off list
To: ferrethealth <ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com>

Dear FHL members,

As I'm sure everyone has noticed we've had some controversial topics
on the list lately. That, in turn, has led to some heated posts which
have led to moderation which have led to complaints about moderation.
I'll refer everyone to the FHL Rules and Terms of Service at
http://f1.grp.yahoofs.com/v1/sAA8T2tazlQOqOnV3ZCBM7ue2SFCfVauNLi7BrgPGysDIY7Px4b9HMPMDW47YjWJ_0yIrySAIKxi_mmMyw6KqA/FHL%20Rules%20and%20Terms%20of%20Service

Here are the rules most relevant to the recent controversies:

9) This list is not Consumer Reports. Opinions of various ferret
health related practices is allowed. Opinions of specific breeders,
shelters, ferret owners and pet shops is not. Political topics are
not allowed.

11) This list is the property of the moderators; anything posted to it
becomes the property of the list and its off-site archives. The
off-site archive is indexed by Google. We reserve the right to censor
posts. We may edit submissions for length or clarity. This includes,
but is not limited to: removing excessive signatures and quotes,
providing appropriate subject lines, and editing spelling and/or
grammar. Submission of material to the list constitutes permission for
electronic distribution on this or other lists by moderators.

14) Here are a few things the FHL is NOT. We are not a training site
though we discuss behavior in relation to the ferret's medical
consequences. We are not a product assessment site for non-medical
situations. For discussions of things like training, personal food
preferences, or how to clean a cage (rather than what product is safe
for what medical condition) please consider joining the wonderful and
more general list, the Ferret Mailing List:
http://listserv.ferretmailinglist.org/archives/ferret-search.html
which is great source for those types of information.

---

Rule #11 is particularly important. We, the moderators, have a right
to censor posts. We can and will edit for clarity, for spelling, to
remove inflammatory or inappropriate language, or to remove anything
deemed off topic or inappropriate for the list. When someone who is
not a vet recommends a medical treatment, a diet, or indeed anything
related to ferret health we can and will insist on some scientific or
medical data to back up claims for non-standard or otherwise unusual
treatments.

We realize that there are controversial topics directly related to
ferret health which people have strong opinions about. Keep the tone
of posts civil and back up your assertions with data and we most
certainly will approve your posts. A polite debate can only be
beneficial to the ferret owners on list and we welcome it. The
current group of moderators does include two veterinarians. We can
and will insert warnings when a treatment suggestion could have
undesired consequences.

If the topic is peripheral, tangential or unrelated to ferret health
we will either ask that you edit the post or reject it. Even if a
post is on topic, if the language used is inflammatory, rude,
denigrating to others on the list, or otherwise inappropriate as
determined by the moderators we will ask you to edit the post or
reject it.

This post is also not open to on list discussion. These
'discussions' clutter the list and very real and important or urgent
time sensitive health concerns/issues could get buried amongst the
clutter. When lists are cluttered with discussions, some people may
only scan or not read at all and urgent concerns can be missed.

Ultimately, the list owners and the moderators who support them have
the right to determine what is and is not acceptable for inclusion on
the Ferret Health List. That is not open to debate.

Thanks in advance for your understanding.
