To: <ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com>

What KIND of implant does he have? Melatonin or Deslorelin? It sounds as if he has advanced adrenal disease, and should probably be getting BOTH of these implants. If not a Deslorelin implant, then Lupron Depot shots.

An enlarged prostate is a serious concern, as he could block at any time, and if he cannot urinate then it would only be a matter of a few hours before his bladder could rupture and kill him.

There are drugs that a ferret can receive to treat the enlarged prostate, and you should look into them immediately. The saw palmetto is obviously not working well enough as his prostate is still enlarged. Not only is this extremely uncomfortable or painful for the ferret, but, as I said, it could also be life-threatening at any time.

There is also the concern of having to push hard to poop. This may or may not be rectified with added meds for his adrenal disease. But if it continues, he’s in danger of prolapsing, another very painful and dangerous situation. He should really be seen and re-evaluated IMMEDIATELY by a good vet who knows ferrets very well. I would not hesitate a moment if I was in your position and would try to get an appt. right away. The vet can then evaluate the other concerns that you have, which may be of less urgency than getting increased treatment for the adrenal disease.
