Subject: [ferrethealth] vaccines

Hi, I am taking my ferrets in to be vaccinated for rabies and distemper and was wondering which brand of shots do they use? I know merial is the most common brand but I saw that there were quite a few differant feline rabies vaccines... And also, where would I be able to purchase the purevax ferret distemper vaccine? my vet does not frequently see ferrets and so does not have it in stock... Which vaccine should I get first and how long in between should I wait to get the other one?

[Your vet has to order these vaccines, not you. You should wait at least 2 weeks between vaccinations. I would recommend getting the Distemper series first, then waiting 2 weeks after the last booster before getting the rabies vaccination.

There is only one approved rabies vaccine for ferrets, which is IMRAB-3. There is only one approved distemper vaccine for ferrets, which is Purevax-D by Merial. Do not use other vaccines.

Distemper booster at 6-8 weeks, repeated at 11-12 weeks and then at 14-16 weeks.

For healthy ferrets over 14 weeks of age that have unknown, incomplete, outdated, or no vaccination history:
Give a series of two vaccines three weeks apart (AFA)

Make certain your vet gives an injection of antihistimine 20 minutes before each vaccination to reduce possibility of anaphylactic reaction. Then wait in the clinic for 30-45 minutes after the vaccination to make certain your ferret is not having a life-threatening reaction.

Refer your vet to this site: http://www.ferret.org/read/vaccinations.html- Moderator (TD)].
