Have never delt with a luxating patella but with a luxating elbow & a luxating hip.
With Angel we put the elbow in a splint so it would heal, 2wks later it popped out again so again we splint it. It was fine for about another 2wks and popped out again. We and our vet decided to leave it alone. Angel did compinsate for it and did fine.

With Elfkin it was her hip. We used an external femeral splint twice and she kept taking it off, so we decided to leave it alone as she didn't apear to be in pain. I notice over the next 6 months that it started to atrophy and the leg had turned under Elfkin making it very difficult for her to walk. My vet and I decided it would be best to amputate Elfkin's hind leg. She did fine as the next day she climbed out of my Martin's playpen.
