Subject: [ferrethealth] ferret scratching
To: "FG-ferrethealth" <ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com>
I have a 3 1/2 year old ferret in the rescue that I've had since August 2011. She came in with the beginning signs of adrenal disease, including loss of fur and excessive scratching. Her scratching is beyond excessive though. She got a melatonin implant right away. She had a Deselorelin implant 10/29/11 and left side adrenal surgery 12/16/11. Before the surgery, she was scratching nearly non-stop when she was awake and awakening frequently to scratch. After the surgery, she doesn't awaken as much for scratching and stops to scratch every few minutes, though it is still too excessive and distressful to her. She got a beautiful, luxurious coat after the surgery. The fur is now thinning on the sides, which could be from the excessive itching. Children's antihistamine has no effect. I've read where she can have a food allergy or an allergy to something else, but she came in this way. I'm not really sure what to do for the poor thing. An obvious thought is the right adrenal gland is affected and the vet just couldn't see that when he did the left adrenal surgery. I can't afford right adrenal surgery on her though, especially if not being sure of the reasons. Any thoughts?
