Subject: [ferrethealth] What methods of taking bloods are there and are they painful? Please help
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Hi, please help, have had a bad experience with blood taking with my sick ferret and it's putting me off having any more done ( with a different vet ). They had to cut her neck open to get blood from the artery last time. Do they usually have to have an anesthetic for blood taking ? because I have read on a website that with the gas ' isoflurane ferrets exibit a rapid decrease in their hematocrit, hemoglobin and red blood cell count which will not help when trying to diagnose how anaemic she is.
Do they have to have the area shaved and is this stressful for them?
Please help as I do not know which direction to have tests done, will either be bloods or heart ultrasound scan or stomach organ ultrasound.
Have got over the stomach infection and ulcers but left with a very lethargic ferret that sleeps nearly all the time, I have to wake her most of the time to eat. She is only eating duck soup no solid food for last 6 weeks. Her weight is fine as are her bowels, no hair loss, no swollen vulva.
Where can I go with this ? Please help
Thank you

Julie
