Subject: [ferrethealth] wood bedding hazards (notice that oak, beech, and some others also dangerous but not discussed before)
To: <ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com>
Gentle Readers...
I strongly disagree with that statement. The articles quoted are all referring to wood dust (saw dust, etc.) and usually in an aerosol environment, not pelletized wood.
**ALL** pelletized wood, manufactured for pellet stoves, are created by first mashing the sawdust/wood pulp, then, after being allowed to dry to a certain percentage of moisture, the pulp is extruded, at a very high pressure through dies, which creates extremely high heat, which in turn 'boils' off the harmful esters found in the wood pulp, making the pellets safe for human AND animal use.
It should be noted here that the woods that are highest in harmful esters, (cedars, etc.) are never used in the pellet industry...they don't pelletize or burn well....most pellets are hard wood pellets, which burn well, and.....have the fewest harmful esters to start with!
I have used wood stove pellets for litter boxes for 30 years, and have never had a ferret with pulmonary issues, and my ferrets typically live into their double digits. I do try and buy hard wood pellets...they hold up better in a litter box than soft wood pellets (Pine, etc.)
Respectfully submitted

This is for when people ask about wood bedding hazards. Pine pellet litter has typically has the volatile components removed, but wood stove pellets (which some people have used in the past do not and actually contain some woods which are even more associated with carcinogenic effects).
