Subject: [ferrethealth] If you are giving cartilage to an arthritic ferret
To: fhl <ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com>, FML List <ferret-l@LISTSERV.FERRETMAILINGLIST.ORG>

A neurotin has been found in shark specimens which should give you pause. (Years ago we used chicken cartilage for a ferret on vet's recommendation, and could have used shark cartilage but felt that it was a silly expense when I could process chicken cartilage myself.) Through the years I have read of people giving that supplement to ferrets.

Short quote from the ProMed write-up:
> Researchers at the
> University of Miami have discovered high concentrations of
> beta-N-methylamino-L-alanine (BMAA) in shark fins, a neurotoxin linked
> to neurodegenerative diseases...
>
> The findings, published in the journal Marine Drugs, suggests that
> consumption of shark fin soup and cartilage pills may pose a
> significant health risk for degenerative brain diseases.
