Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: What methods of taking bloods are there and are they painful? Please help
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Hi Julie,
I routinely draw blood from the caudal artery on unanesthetized ferrets using a 25g needle, slightly bent. As long as the ferret is properly distracted (and towel wrapped), I can easily get 2cc of blood, plenty for a comp/cbc. We rarely gas down or sedate ferrets for blood draws or catheters, but I leave the jugular draws to my vet...I am not confident enough to try it yet on the ferrets, but my vet makes it look so easy. We never do cut downs unless a cannula is going to be inserted for multiple draws.

Regards,
Bonnie
