Subject: [ferrethealth] Mass in chest area
To: Ferret Health <ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com>
My boy Shane is an appx. 6 year old (shelter boy). He's had on and off again diarrhea for the past year. In December, he had stopped eating for me, so I brought him to the emergency vets. During that time, a mass was discovered in his chest area, right by his heart. The emergency vets didn't feel comfortable doing an ultrasound guided aspirate, so he was put on Pred (to make a long story short). About a week after he was started on the Pred, I found a vet who felt confident enough to try the ultrasound aspirate, but she advised weaning him off the Pred for at least a week to try to get accurate as possible results, however I could not get him off the Pred without him taking a total downturn, so I decided to just keep him on the Pred and monitor the mass.
Well of course the mass is growing. His regular vet (she was unavail during the Dec emergency), said that they could try to get that ultrasound aspirate even with him on the Pred... but we know there's a darn good (bad) chance that the results will not be correct because he is already on the Pred.
So... because of the risk of this aspirate (near his heart) and the low probability of getting accurate results... should I not do this aspirate? And just guess at which chemo drug to try? He's pretty much really uncomfortable on the Pred. He's on 0.9ml (1mg/1ml). I'm hesitant to just try going up on the Pred because he is just so uncomfortable (big pred belly).
If anyone has any advise or suggestions, it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Andrea and Shane
