Subject: [ferrethealth] Sedation for deslorelin implant?
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
My vet has never used these before, but ordered them for 2 of my ferrets from Peptech due to my urging. Their appt is tomorrow to have them put in. They told me that I have to drop them off in the AM and pick them up later in the afternoon because they have to sedate them for it and also give pain meds afterward so they need to monitor them throughout the day to make sure they are ok. The receptionist implied that these were the instructions from Peptech and they wanted to follow the correct protocol since they have never done this before. I find this a little odd. Is this the correct procedure?
Thanks,
Holly
[My vet sedates briefly with isoflurane. The entire procedure takes about 10 minutes. Personally, I am happy that they are sedated, its a pretty big needle! In terms of pain medications post-procedure, some needed it, some didn't. I only had one who wouldn't stop bleeding at the implantation site, brought him back to the clinic with his carrier spattered in blood. They reapplied a surgical adhesive and it finally stopped bleeding. - Moderator (TD)].
