Subject: Re: [ferrethealth] Sedation for deslorelin implant?
To: <ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com>

I've had them put into five different ferrets, some getting implanted twice (many months apart). Two different vets have done them. One is a great surgeon and we never used any sedation, I just "distracted" the ferret with some ferretone from a syringe and he slid the implant in. The other vet prefers to use a little sedation, for her own benefit as much as for the ferret, since surgery and implants are not her strong suit. Either way, the procedure has always been short and sweet, and they are always fine to go home right afterwards. None have ever required any pain meds, and the implant site has only bled for more than a minute or so on one occasion, and even then it wasn't a lot. Sometimes some surgical glue might be needed to close the wound, other times not.

If I were you I might also be a little concerned about the cost of the whole thing skyrocketing if they start charging you for a full day of care, outpatient surgery charges, etc. Usually the cost of the whole thing is under $200, incl. the office visit and the implant. I pay around $150 where I live, but I've heard of others paying more.
