To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
I've never used sedation for any implant, either deslorelin or melatonin. Most of the time a good scruff and a puddle of ferretone distracts the ferret quite happily, and in the rare ferret that doesn't like ferretone, another treat may work. The placement of the implant is extremely fast, and despite the size of the needle, the length of the bevel is such that it tends to "slide" through the skin rather than "punch" through. I think I've used a dab of surgical glue once - the rest of the time bleeding is either non-existent of minimal and easily controlled with pressure for a short time. I've also never seen a ferret exhibit pain following the implant.
I have, however, seen a ferret die following sedation by a colleague of mine in order to place a deslorelin implant.
