Subject: [ferrethealth] progylcem possible side effects? / ferret nightmares
To: "ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com" <ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com>
hi again, my ibd boy is starting progylcem tomorrow in addition to his prednisolone regimen to manage his insulinoma better.
he had a mini seizure last wednesday (3/14) which sent him into a flare up of loose stool/low energy for the past 5 days. today is the first day since that his stool is normal and his energy is a bit better. his BG was 69 this morning though so we are keeping a close watch on him.
my question is i know i have to be careful about dehydration/diarrhea with progylcem, but is there anything else i should be on the lookout for knowing that this particular ferret has a very compromised stomach and is extremely sensitive to stress?
also, the same boy has a lot of nightmares (or what i assume are nightmares). he cries out in his sleep a lot. the way a ferret cries when they're scared/hurt. sometimes he's so scared/upset his tail is flared. i go over and wake him and cuddle him to reassure him. it always causes him to lick my face like he's happy/relieved to see me. when he settles down, i put him back to sleep. sometimes he has multiple episodes in one night and he has episodes at least 2 days a week- sometimes up to 4 or 5 days. is there any way i can help him with this? i try to always go to him when i hear him and wake him if it seems like a nightmare but i'd much rather have him sleep peacefully.
thank you,
amanda
[Have you discussed these 'nightmares' with your vet? There could be an underlying physical cause. I have used proglycem with no problems in the past. As with pred, give it after eating and do not alter or skip a dose without your vet's specific directions. - Moderator (TD)].
