Subject: [ferrethealth] Ferret not passing stools or urine after tail amputation
To: FHL <ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com>

Jake, neutered, 6 1/2 years old, had developed a growth in the middle of
his tail (chordoma?), the lump got bigger over the last week so it was
removed today. About half to two thirds of the tail has gone. Jake also had
a skin tumour from his neck / throat area removed. He has not passed urine
or stools since the surgery which was 7 hours ago. I expressed his bladder
earlier as it felt rather large and he passed quite a bit of urine. But now
his bladder is full again and I find it hard to express, he seems to be in
pain although he's had Metacam and Buprenorphine. He's been very restless
and agitated since surgery, too, and has not really slept and he keeps
digging in his toilet angrily. If anybody has any idea what could be going
on, how the surgery could have affected his ability to go to the toilet or
how it could have made him so restless, please let me know. Also could he
still be in pain despite all the pain meds? He has eaten a bit but not as
much as usually. Will make sure I express his bladder, it is midnight here
but I do have emergency vets if need be.

Ulrike

[You need to get him to an emergency vet right away! One of the first things surgeons look for post-surgically is that an animal is eliminating. It is very serious indeed if he is not! Do not express his bladder yourself or you may rupture it. And you can be guaranteed that he would be in pain despite the pain meds. - Moderator (TD)].
