You are very nice to write me...So you don't think it's selfish of me to want to do the same thing? Take care of him till the end instead of taking him to the vet? I can deal with him leaving much easier if I do it the way you did...I don't want him suffering and so far...He doesn't seem to be in pain..and still eating..a little

[It is selfish if the only reason he is being kept alive is because it is too painful to let him go. However, if you are keeping him alive because he still has a quality of life, and he has more good days than bad, then it is not a selfish act.
I don't agree that one knows when it is the best time to euthanize, it is never easy and the attending vet's counsel during a difficult decision like this is crucial.
Euthanasia, if done correctly, with a pre-sedative before the lethal dose and NOT into the heart - can be very preaceful and gentle.
I give the sedative at home while my beloved fuzzy has a warm bowl of duck soup liberally sprinkled with Ferretone. They gently nod off at home, eating a favourite treat and in the arms of their human. By the time I get them to the vet they are deeply asleep and not aware of their surroundings. - Moderator (TD)].
