Subject: [ferrethealth] Re:Proscar, Propecia, Avodart?
Hi Joanne
Great question. Proscar/Propecia block the 5 alpha
reductase II enzyne, and Avodart blocks 5 alpha reductase
II AND I enzyme. Thus Avodart works a little bit better.
As for doses Proscar/Propecia 1 mg once a day for 1-2
months (ie till the prostate shrinks) then 0.1 mg once a
day after that to keep the prostate from "growing."
A suggested dose for Avodart is 0.05 mg (1/10 of the
capsule) once a day. After the prostate shrinks then
0.05 mg every other day. There has not been much
work with Avodart in dogs or ferrrets, so the dose may change
with time. Remember to use melatonin because it can also
shrink the prostate and lower the adrenal hormones.
Hope that helps,
Jerry Murray, DVM
